Hell, who am I kidding, it was even hard when I was 20.
So, because of all the hoopla this week over the Conan vs Jay, I felt it was my obligation as a citizen to at least record the last Conan broadcast from N.B.C.
I am old enough to remember J. Carson. The original Tonight Show host. I remember hearing my mom chuckle from the other room when I was supposed to be sleeping and on occasion even caught the show as I got older. Those were the days when the guests could quite possibly show up three sheets to the wind, and everyone smoked. Everyone.
So, this morning, I watched the last Conan broadcast. To be honest, I don't remember watching the show before (so I guess I am partially responsible for him being unemployed since it had to do with ratings. Sorry Conan...bring the wife and kids over for some meatloaf and mashed potatoes with a side of corn. You can even smush the corn into the potatoes for a new taste sensation.)
This guy..Conan...he is a class act. I know he will land on his feet, I just hope the hundreds of staff personnel do too. Again Conan, I am sorry I didn't support you every night. A girl has to get up early and work, ya know? See you around 6 tonight for dinner. <> So a very unofficial poll ...who do you prefer, Jay or Conan?

Neither, sorry. :)
Never saw Conan, but can't stand Jay, so it's Conan by default. There's just nothing about Jay Leno that I like. His jokes, his looks, his mannerisms - hate it all.
Nobody can replace Johnny Carson. Except possibly Ellen Degeneres (sp?).
CNN!
I used to prefer Leno, but now I prefer Conan. It was so great how he didnt bad mouth NBC and he was tearing up talking about how great his audience is. i will miss him and i really hope that he gets a new gig soon, though NBC says he cant host another show for 7 months :\
I remember Johnny Carson very well and have not been a fan of late night since then. Like you I have to be at work early and the days of staying up late have long past. I never thought I would see the day that sleep meant so much to me and that I would become an old fogey.
The only TV I watch late at night is Bravo reruns- real housewives or project runway. I am ashamed.
Love the header :)
OHN,
Steve Allen created the late night talk show style, but Jack Parr is considered the original host of The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson is the one who made the show great.
I, too, remember the days when the guests were three-sheets-to-the-wind and smoking, and they would stick around for the full 90 minute show. They wouldn't run off after their interview. Only the biggest stars were allowed to do that.
Conan is the one with a long, bright future ahead of him. NBC did not give him time to build a strong following at 11:35pm. And, as for you not watching his show regularly and causing his demise, don't worry. There are 35 million reasons I think he'll be OK.
Team Conan!
I suppose I am also to blame as I don't really watch late night talk shows. I occasionally have watched them when there is an interesting guest (such as a basketball player). Even so, I would only watch the inteview and then change channels. If I had to pick a late night talk show host it would be Dave Letterman.
When I went to NYC with my brother we saw a taping of Letterman. Neither of us had never watched Letterman before getting the tickets (he wanted to a see a TV show being recorded and it so happened that there were tickets available). After learning about this, I started to watch some Letterman so I would have a feel for the format of the show. I now try to watch at least a few minutes of it each night.
It was an interesting experience. It was cool to see the set. Letterman is funny. There was a standup comedian beforehand. We got to see material that did not make it to national TV (as the show is recorded in the afternoon and edited before airing). When we saw it, there was about an hour and 15 minutes of entertainment (including a band and breaks). Laughter was encouraged. Best of all, it was free.
The process of getting the tickets in NYC takes several hours. It is like being at the airport. Hurry up and wait. You also have to keep your ID out. Understandably, there is no photography, food, or drinks.
I am a rabid Craig Ferguson fan so I don't watch either, I have to say I don't find them all that funny, and Letterman is kind of mean sometimes. Anyway they're rich, I should be so lucky my jobs cuts me loose with a few mil, and you're right, he'll be fine.
Neither really. Back in the day I would watch Letterman. And now, I can't stay up that late..... Don't feel sorry for Conan - he's filthy rich, he'll get over it.
That was my comment but it wouldn't post under my name. Deathstar
Between Jay's chin and Conan's hair, I never felt the urge to watch either one. And don't stress over staying up late and having to get up at 6. you're programmed that way and it only gets worse as you age.......until you retire! Then you can enjoy some 2pm naps.
Haha, I too have a hard time staying up to watch those shows and then be up by 6 the next day. Luckily NPR covers most of that stuff and I get my update on my way to a clients. Ohhh haha and I love that picture you have on your background of your dog's guilty face and torn up toy. hehe
I lean toward Conan's sense of humor. Jay has some funny bits, like the talking photo booth and "jaywalking" but Conan is just funnier. BUT if Craig Ferguson wasn't on sooo late, he'd have both of them beat =)
