It is just a bowl

It’s just a bowl.

It doesn’t matter that every time I use it I think of my mom. That was the bowl that she made her tuna fish in…the one with just the right amount of miracle whip to tuna ratio and given the day she added either chives or finely chopped green onions.

It is just a bowl.

It doesn’t matter that when we had egg salad, that bowl was in the fridge waiting for me to grab some crackers and sneak a scoop because it was just so good.

It is just a bowl. I keep telling myself that but when I heard that quiet little crack, I got that sinking feeling in my stomach like when I was 6 and someone just broke one of my toys. I even hesitated before I put it in the microwave, wondering if I should, but it is glass and I put glass bowls in the microwave all the time..just not this one.

It is just a bowl. Why am I so sad that it is going to head to the trash?? Because it is a tangible thing that I can actually touch that gives me good memories of a childhood that didn’t have that many highlights. I can’t believe I am even blogging about this..it’s just a bowl.

I couldn't throw it away. I think you should print out this post, put it in an envelope and put that envelope inside the bowl and tuck the bowl away somewhere safe.

That crack is the memory you will give it that your sons can recall.

I agree. And I'm sending you a hug from the top of the world, it's a little cold but still means the same thing. (It's -32 here today).

I am so sorry OHN, it's not just a bowl, but a bowl full of memories.

I broke a vase that a dear friend made and I crazy glued it together and put it on a high enough shelf that I can see it's beauty but not it's cracks.

I don't know if that would work for you, or DD's idea, something that preserves the good memories the bowl hold for you.

I might not use it again, but I might wrap it up and put it away some where. Come to think of it I guess hanging on to the good stuff of childhood when there aren't many is pretty important.

Don't throw it out. Keep it.

Maybe you can use it to hold potpourri or something like that.

It is full of memories. It needs to stay.

DON"T throw it away! Save it...put it somewhere in the house that you can see everyday! So you get those warm fuzzies everytime you see it! Hugs

Oh, I'm so sorry that happened. And it's not just a bowl. It's part of your history, part of what made your childhood memorable. And I agree with DD. Pack the bowl away, and bring it out now and again to remember why it was so important to you.

Wow.

What a beautiful post.

If my son every feels that way about my tuna fish / egg salad bowl when he grows up I'll probably burst into tears of joy.

I can only agree with all others - save it!
I have a chipped glass plate my paternal grandmother used for cookies and even though the color is nigh hideous, I would never part with it!

I totally get it. A now very valuable bowl set sitting in our cupboard is the last tangible thing that ties my dh to his mother whom he lost when he was 21 years old. They are precious for all the reasons you note. When we put them to use it's like having a very real symbol of his mom with us.

I coulnd't part, but that's just me. I think it is not JUST a bowl either. IS there some way that you can use it for holding something special like potpourri or beautiful objects? Is it totally unusable?

If so, would you break up the pieces and use them to make a mosaic in some way?

Just have to add my agreement... keep the bowl. The memories will still be there when you see it, even if you can't use it anymore. I agree that even if you just have pieces left you can do something with them to keep them around for the memories...

So sorry!
