ATTENTION CANADIAN READERS
This is directed to you or any of you that are familiar with the ways of the Canadians.....Starting Monday S1 is on spring break from college, he is 19, and has told me he and 3 friends are going to Canada for 4 days. Now the kicker...he is telling me that he is considered an adult in Canada, he can drink, gamble, and basically choose any vice that is legal-(not sure about this one but he was telling me that marijuana is legal there?) and is planning on letting it all hang out. So, my question to you is, should I plan on having to make a trip to Canada to bail him out of anything? With gas at over $3.50 a gallon, I might have to let his scrawny ass sit for a bit. Mind you, this is a kid that is a straight A student and never gets in trouble (except for the post about the drinking incident that landed him in the ER, but the trauma of that is slowly passing with time:) They are staying in a casino/hotel near Niagara Falls. (Do you wonder why a group of 19 year olds are going to the cold north when most of their classmates are heading to Mexico? Yeah, me too.) Any and all input is welcome--as long as it is before Monday because by then, he will be on his way to what he suspects is utopia.

A couple of things... first up, no, marijuana is NOT legal in Canada. You can still be charged for posession and I know because I work for the national police force. Second, yes, at 19 he is legal and can drink while in Toronto but all establishments are responsible for cutting him off if they see that he's past his limit. Third, with all the damn snow up here, they are going to be bound to the hotel, I can guarantee it. I hope he's got some serious winter clothing and boots. Frankly, if I were him, I'd be heading south. But to each his own. Feel free to contact me for more info and/or reassurances! You can find me at jiliana2 @ gmail (dot) com. Chin up though; lots of Americans do come to Canada and he'll survive! We're not THAT bad yanno! :)
Tell him to come on up here. He can help us move! Ontario right now has a million feet of snow and you're son is CRACKED for wanting to come up here in all the snow when he could be heading somewhere warmer. Tell him to bring a touque, eh! And, if he is going to be bringing a cell phone he's going to get charged millions of dollars in roaming charges and he'll have to pay for them (I worked for Cingular/ATT call centre, trust me). Tell him if he comes further north and helps us move we will let him drink for free! He'll be able to see buffalo, the Northern Lights AND be able to go home and say "Mom, it warmed up to -35! Seriously, he'll be fine. He may come back wanting to play hockey, drink beer and say "Eh" a lot, but that's what happens to all Americans when us hockey-playing-touque wearing- eh-saying Canadians assimilate you. Or, if there's an east coaster around (and there are LOTS in Toronto) he'll just end up in a kitchen party, drinking beer and singing. See, you have nothing to worry about. We're the friendly country, remember? :P
Just make sure he dresses warmly, has a cell phone, and will not be driving anywhere when he goes out at night. Or you can lock him in the closet.
I am just over an hour away from Niagara Falls. He may be able to drink, but everything is in walking distance, so he will be relatively safe. Gil is right, he can drink, but there are usually cops wandering around the area and it is a pretty safe place to be.
Not much new to add, pot is illegal. The west coast has more of an easy access to pot rep, but still illegal. Yes he can drink, but as others have said, he should just walk.
And people wonder why I don't want to adopt a teenager! LOL
Good Luck, he'll be fine. Canada is safer as a whole, for silly drunks wandering around. And if he'd be headed south they'd still drink but maybe get in trouble for it.
Hope that helps.
Oh, ya, Canadian girls are quite nice . . . my American husband married one!
;-)
I cant add onto this post, but I did jump onto say that I met the most wonderful exchange student from Canada once and I spent the whole year, running an absolute muck with her...
I still miss her today....
And 3.50 a gallon, I'm gonna stop carrying on about petrol prices over here !
Yes he can drink and gamble, however, weed is most certainly not legal. If he goes to BC they tend to be a bit more lenient, but the American border guards won't quite see feel the same way when he comes back. BTW is still friggin cold here. Go South young man!
um...I am so glad my boys are still 8 and 5....
I just can't imagine!
